Episode 2- Changes In The Way We Work
Libby Young is Transportation Lead / Senior Transport Engineer at Stantec based out of their Gisborne office. Here Libby tells us about team life in a large corporate organisation, working remotely, and changes in the way they work at Stantec. For the second-consecutive year, global design firm Stantec was named to the 2021 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI), a performance ranking of public companies committed to transparent gender-data reporting and advancing women’s equality in the workplace.
What was it like making the move to Stantec?
I wasn’t seeking employment at the time, but after spending a week at home on sick leave absolutely run down, I knew something had to change. On the Friday, I received a call to gauge my interest in an opportunity with Stantec in Gisborne. In less than 2 weeks, I had taken the opportunity and resigned. I didn’t really give myself time to get cold feet, I was all in but when time drew closer to starting, I was beginning to wonder if I had signed my time away to a corporate. That was a little daunting, but I was soon surprised.
What is life at Stantec like for you as a female engineer?
I didn’t think employers like Stantec existed. A large organisation that cares and invests in their people in a way which makes it feel like a family. Aside from the policies and practices that are centered around flexibility, balance and achieving outcomes, they also lead the way for gender equality, diversity and inclusion. The people that work at Stantec are what really makes it great. On a day-to-day basis, I am located remotely from the teams that I work with but am very connected and know exactly what’s happening on the coal face. At Stantec we do what we say we will do and that also means keeping each other accountable. I really like that about the team.
How has your career developed since joining Stantec?

What has made the difference to you?
The training and development opportunities are endless. Stantec supports everything from on-the-job training, professional development, formal training pathways to requirements required by the industry. An employer is only as good as its people. The people at Stantec are awesome, genuine and are really proud and passionate about what they do. This is what creates a very positive, upbeat and energetic environment.
